An alternate-history fantasy of faith and wizardry set during the Italian Renaissance from the author of Tea with the Black Dragon.

Discover three novels of magic—light and dark—from a winner of the John W. Campbell and Philip K. Dick awards.

In Damiano, our hero is Damiano Dalstrego, a wizard’s son, an alchemist, and the heir to dark magics. But he is also an innocent, a young scholar and musician befriended by the Archangel Raphael, who instructs him in the lute. To save his beloved city from war, Damiano leaves his cloistered life and sets out on a pilgrimage, seeking the aid of a powerful sorceress as he walks the narrow path between light and shadow, accompanied only by his talking dog. But his road is filled with betrayal, disillusionment, and death . . .

In Damiano’s Lute, shattered by the demonic fury of his dark powers, Damiano has forsaken his magical heritage to live as a mortal man. With the guidance of the Archangel Raphael, the chidings of a brash young rogue, and the memory of a beautiful pagan witch, he journeys across a plague-ridden French countryside in search of peace. But the Father of Lies reaches out once again . . .

In Raphael, weakened by his contact with mortals, the Archangel Raphael falls prey to Lucifer, who strips him of his angelic powers. Sold in the Moorish slave markets, confused and humbled by his sudden humanity, Raphael finds his only solace in the friendship of a Berber woman—and the spiritual guardianship of his former pupil Damiano Delstrego.

Now available in one volume, this epic of demons, dragons, romance, and heroic adventure is a saga you will never forget.

The Damiano Trilogy Damiano Damiano Lute and Raphael edition by R A MacAvoy Religion Spirituality eBooks

I'm delighted at the chance to add this beloved trilogy to my kindle for such a bargain price -- it's one of those works that is a fresh pleasure to reread over and over down the years, and one of the fantasy worlds that stays with you like a sunny secret garden in the mind.

It's true that these books are based in history. But they are also fantasy of the highest order -- it's MacAvoy's great gift, to magically transform a real time, from the modern (the Black Dragon novels) to the antique. And oh, can she write! This is prose to emulate -- simple, lyrical, memorable.

The Damiano Trilogy Damiano Damiano Lute and Raphael edition by R A MacAvoy Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

MacAvoy has created a keeper on Damian Dalstrego, a witch, alchemist and lite player, who takes music lessons from the archangel Raphael and has a dog as a familiar.

When his town is sacked once again by mercenaries, he tries everything in his power to save the city that he loves, and the people along with it. Damian's humility and love shine through, even when he is put on the most horrifying situations.

Great plot, excellent characters, very inventive, and the ending was simply perfect. Highly Recommended!
A gentle historical fantasy about a young man who is taught to play the lute by the angel Raphael, and brings out magic around him. Well written, seems historically accurate, good descriptions.

A marvelous change from so much fantasy that's delving deep into violence, rape, explicit sex, etc.
Highly original and beautifully written. The three story lines weave together nicely and the themes built on each other rather than repeating. Quiet but involving.
The three books of this series have always seemed like a beautiful piece of music to me. Slow, sleepy, like a high summer day. The battle in the final book seemed quite exciting to me. I first read these books about 20 years ago and re-reading them showed they are still every bit as good now as they were then.
It weaves magic, music and mythology into a cloth of light. The reader is so lifted into the story that the characters become companions on the journey. It is a delight both joyful and sad as life itself.
I think the reason Roberta MacAvoy's Damiano novels are not better known is that they are so hard to classify. Is the Damiano trilogy collected in this ebook ("Damiano," "Damiano's Lute" and "Raphael") an alternate history of a time when the pope was exiled in Avignon, and the Black Death and the condottiere made life miserable, brutish, and short for almost everyone else? Is it the story of a witch who wanted to be a musician, and his little talking dog? Is it the tale of a struggle between two brothers, who happen to be the Seraph, Raphael and Lucifer, Prince of Darkness?

MacAvoy has a way of bringing me into every scene, using precise language and memorable detail. If history is fair to fantasy authors, Damiano and his lute and his little talking dog will outlast all of the overblown 'ologies' of Brooks, Goodkind, and Martin.
I don't know how the text of this book was captured, but there are several passages where it is obvious that text is missing (or there is extremely poor writing, and even poorer editing). Also, the character recognition software often substituted h for b. All this makes for passages that are distracting and discouraging.
